Detail InformationEdit

Sherzer Observatory was established in 1878 with a present from the voters of Ypsilanti. The Observatory housed a 4-inch (100 mm), $600 Alvan Clark refractor. The first observatory was placed on Pierce Hall was hit by a tornado and destroyed in 1893. It had been then resettled to the roof of the new scientific discipline Building in 1903. The building and observatory was later named once William Sherzer, a science prof at the varsity WHO planned the look for the new building once seeing similar facilities on a visit to European country.
In 1928, a 10-inch (250 mm) refractor telescope factory-made by telescope maker and amateur uranologist John Mellish was put in on a German equatorial mount designed by physics prof Edwin robust. The University Archives still has information made by students mistreatment this telescope and also the brass mulled wine transit telescope that shared the observatory with the refractor.
In the Nineteen Seventies and Eighties, members of the EMU student physical science club created various updates and restorations to stay the aging observatory running. Then, in 1989, Sherzer Hall was gutted by hearth. Virtually half the building was destroyed as well as the first observatory. Luckily, the University set to reconstruct.
The new observatory opened in September 1991 with a 10-inch (250 mm) corrected refractor telescope and German equatorial mount targeted beneath a 6-meter dome. A classroom/computer work was finished in 1997, and extra 8-inch (200 mm) to 14-inch (360 mm) telescopes, CCD cameras, and alternative instrumentation another to the inventory for student use. A secondary observatory with an automatic 8-inch (200 mm) SCT for CCD imaging was another to the upper side level, changing into operational in 2008.
