The Lyceum Theatre may be a Great White Way Theatre set at 149 West forty fifth Street in midtown Manhattan, big apple town. Opened in 1903, it’s one amongst the 2 oldest extant Great White Way venues (along with the colony Theatre). The Lyceum is that the oldest unendingly operational legitimate theatre in big apple town, and therefore the 1st Great White Way theatre ever to be granted landmark standing (1974). It’s one amongst the few theatres in big apple that continues to work beneath its original name.
Designed by architects Herts & Tallant, the Lyceum was designed by promoter Daniel Frohman, replacement Frohman’s earlier Lyceum on Fourth Avenue that closed Gregorian calendar month 1902. The new Lyceum opened on All Souls’ Day, 1903 with the play The Proud aristocrat. Frohman’s brother Charles served because the theater’s manager till his death in 1915. Among the distinguished performers United Nations agency appeared on the Lyceum’s stage in its early years were Ethel Barrymore, Billie Burke, Basil Rathbone, Fanny Brice, Walter filmmaker, Miriam Hopkins, and Cornelia player.
The theatre maintains most of its original Beaux-Arts style, together with its elaborate marble staircases and undulating marquee. Though it’s 3 levels, it’s one amongst the littlest Great White Way theatres in terms of capability, seating solely 950. Associate in Nursing flat set on top of the orchestra, originally employed by Frohman, is currently the headquarters of the Shubert Archives.
