The Queens–Midtown Tunnel (sometimes merely called the Midtown Tunnel) may be a main road tunnel and road in ny town. It crosses below the strait and connects the Borough of Queens (at the island town terminus of I-495, the island Expressway) on island with the Borough of Manhattan (between the main cross-town thoroughfares of East thirty fourth Street and East forty second Street within the Midtown Manhattan area). Designed by Ole Singstad, it had been opened to traffic on Nov fifteen, 1940. The tunnel consists of dual tubes carrying four traffic lanes, and is 6,414 feet (1,955 m) long. It once carried ny State Route twenty four.
When designing began, a bridge was powerfully supported by some backers, UN agency balked at the accrued price of a tunnel and therefore the undeniable fact that it’d not be completed in time for the 1939 World’s honest. Manhattan borough president Samuel Levy above all was a powerful sponsor of a six-lane bridge set up. Commissioner William Milton Friedman of the ny town Tunnel Authority rejected the choice outright.
