The Salmagundi Club, conjointly called the Salmagundi Art Club, was based in 1871 in Village, Manhattan, big apple town, New York, within the u. S.. It presently is found at forty seven Fifth Avenue. As of 2009, the Salmagundi Club has over eight hundred members. For nearly a hundred and forty years, the Salmagundi Club has served as a middle for fine arts and artists, conducting art exhibitions, art categories, demonstrations, and art auctions yet as hosting several different events. It’s conjointly a sponsor of the u. S. Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP).
Originally known as the big apple Sketch category, and later known as the big apple Sketch Club, the Salmagundi Club had its beginnings at the jap fringe of Village in sculptor dessert apple Scott Hartley’s Great White Way studio, wherever a gaggle of artists, students, and friends at the National Academy of style, that at The Time was placed at Fourth Avenue and ordinal Street, gathered weekly on weekday evenings. The club formally modified its name to The Salmagundi Sketch Club in January 1877. The name has multifariously been attributed to salmagundi, a stew that the cluster has served from its earliest years, or, to Washington Irving’s Salmagundi Papers.
Growing apace, and housed in several temporary locations, the club was at fourteen West Twelfth Street for a few years. In 1917, the club purchased the 1852 Irad Hawley brownstone townhouse at forty seven Fifth Avenue between East Eleventh and East Twelfth Streets, constructing an oversized two-story addition within the grounds to accommodate its main art galleries and room. The building was selected a historical landmark by the big apple town Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1969. It had been other to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
