The Metropolitan Savings repository opened on might twenty two, 1867 at the northeast corner of Third Avenue (Manhattan) – currently Cooper sq. – and East seventh Street, in the big apple town. The building, that was designed by designer Carl Pfeiffer in Second Empire vogue, is four stories high, forty five feet (14 m) wide and seventy five feet (23 m) deep, and was thought-about at The Time it opened to be one among the foremost finely made edifices, “from attic to basement.”Its facades were composed of white marble, with the higher floor being fenced by a mansard. The building was fireproof, as no flamable materials were used throughout construction, either internally or outwardly. The whole value of the structure was $150,000.
