Houghton was named once Houghton County, that was named once Frederick Douglass Houghton, AN yankee scientist and medical man, primarily illustrious for his exploration of the Keweenaw land of Michigan. Houghton is typically confused with, or thought to be near, Houghton Lake the latter is truly placed within the state’s Lower Peninsula. Attributable to its location within the northwestern portion of the peninsula, Houghton is isolated from the state’s most thickly settled areas. It’s farther to drive from Houghton to Motor City, Michigan than it’s from Motor City to Washington, DC. It takes many fewer hours to visit urban center, Wisconsin or city, MN from Houghton than it will to visit Motor City.
