Bheemili, also known as Bhimlipatam or ‘Bheemunipatnam’, derives its name from the popular mythological character Bheema (one of the five Pandavas), who killed Bakasura here. He installed an idol of Goddess Lakshmi for his victory on top of a hill. According to history, the temple was constructed in 1226 by Salivahana saka. There are also cluster of temples along the line of sea coast. East India Company made this Bheemunipatnam as major trading center of east coast. Dutch and British rulers used a port present earlier at this place for trade through sea route.
