Detail InformationEdit

Inspired by the classic Roman/Egyptian obelisk kind, prince County Veteran’s Memorial Obelisk was originally erected within the middle of a park placed at the North Second and State Streets intersection of downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from 1866 to 1876 as a tribute to prince County’s war troopers. It stands a hundred and ten feet (33.5 meters) high and deliberation over 600 tons and was cut from stone taken from the banks of the near river. A stone plaque is inscribed: “To the troopers of prince County UN agency gave their lives for the lifetime of the Union within the suppression of the rebellion 1861-1865. Erected by their fellow voters.”The surrounding park was step by step divided and developed through the years. Once years of exposure to traffic and weather, the monument became broken by passing vehicles and exposure to weather. A call was created to renew it and relocate it. Once an intensive cleanup, the monument was moved to its gift location in 1960 at Third and Division streets, close to William Penn highschool and Italian Lake, within the Uptown section of Harrisburg.
