Detail InformationEdit

Ashland is that the name of the plantation of the 19th-century KY solon pol, settled in Lexington, Kentucky, within the central Bluegrass Country of the state. It’s a registered National Historic Landmark. The Ashland Stakes, a Thoroughbred race at Keeneland Race Course that has ran annually since the race course 1st opened in 1936, was named for the traditionally necessary estate.
Henry Clay came to Lexington, KY from Virginia in 1797. He began shopping for land for his plantation in 1804.1 The Ashland farm—which throughout Clay’s time period was outside of town limits—at its largest consisted of over 600 acres (240 ha). It’s unclear whether or not Clay named the plantation or preserved a previous name, however he was bearing on his estate as “Ashland” by 1809.2 The name derives from the ash forest that stood at the positioning. Clay and his family resided at Ashland from c. 1806 till his death in 1852 (his widow Lucretia Clay got rid of in 1854). Given his political career, Clay spent most of the years between 1810-1829 in Washington, DC. He was a serious planter, owning up to sixty slaves to control his plantation.
The crop fully grown on the farm was hemp. Ovis aries and 6 alternative species of European farm animal were foreign and bred on the farm. Clay’s record of his breeding operation, together with the Herefords that he introduced, is currently displayed at Ashland. The historic house depository opened to the general public in 1950.
