Lakshmi Narasimha Temple/Ugra Narasimha Statue, Hampi is a statue of Laxmi Narasimha. The statue is carved out of a single block of stone. This single stone structure of Lord Narasimha is a major Tourist Attraction in Karnataka and is considered to be an important Monument in Karnataka. The largest monolithic structure in Hampi, Ugra Narasimha was built from granite. Though granite is not suitable for intricate art work, the delicacy of art was compensated by the size of the sculptures. The Statue of Ugra Narasimha, Hampi is 6.7 meters in height. The Narasimha image has a mane, broad chest and bulging eyes and is seen seated on the coils of Adishesha, the seven hooded snake. The entire image is set within a Makara Torana. Ugra Narasimha had a smaller image of Goddess Lakshmi seated next to him which was damaged in the Battle of Talikota. This statue of Ugra Narasimha Statue in Hampi is an example of the brilliant architectural expertise that flourished during the yesteryears in this south Indian kingdom. The Ugra Narasimha Statue in Hampi in Karnataka in India portrays an angry and ferocious expression of the Lord Narasimha with Goddess Laxmi sitting on his lap. The Ugra Narasimha Statue at Hampi is an image of Lord Narasimha, where the lord has been depicted with large bulging eyes and a broad chest. The sculpture projects Lord Narasimha in the half man and half lion incarnation. The image depicts the Lord Narasimha sitting on the coils of Shesha Naga, guarded by lions on all sides. This statue shows the seven heads of Shesha Naga arching over Lord Narasimha as a shade. This idol projects the ferocious facet of Lord Vishnu. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the idol of the Goddess Laxmi had fallen off, which was later recovered and is now kept at the Kamalapura Museum.

When the Ugra Narasimha Statue in Hampi was restored, some features were added to the stone sculpture to make it more firm and stable. Fortunately, the restoration work of the statue has not hampered the original brilliance of the statue. People in thousands still flock in, everyday, to the spot to see the magnificent sculpture that reflects the rich artistic heritage of India.

How to ReachEdit

Taxi : Taxies are available from airport and railway station.

Bus : Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation operates daily buses to Hospet from Bangalore, Mysore and Gokarna. From Hospet local bus is available to Hampi for ₹20. There are private bus companies operating from most places in Goa and from Gokarna which run an overnight service to Hampi. Unfortunately, there is no direct return so you take a local bus (or taxi) to Hospet and take it from there.

Train : Hampi does not have a railway station of its own and the nearest railhead to the place is provided by Hospet, which is about 13 km away. There are about 10 daily trains and about 5 special trains to the station, which ply once or twice a week. From Bangalore, Hampi Express is the best option. taxies are available to Hampi from here, costing about Rs 300.

Air : Nearest Airport to Hampi is Belgaum airport, situated at a distance of approximately 270 km. From there, you can take a taxi to the city, which costs somewhere around Rs 2500. Bangalore airport is around 350 km from Hampi.

Others : By Boat : Most of the guest houses are on other side of the river (area called Virupapur Gadde). To access them, you need to cross river by Motor boat (₹10 for locals, ₹15 for tourists, boat runs until 18:00. If you cannot get on the boat, you have to pay auto ₹500-600 to take you other side via Hospet-Hugili- Hanumanhalli, which is a 40 km tour.
