The builders here make use of traditional techniques which have been passed on from generation to generation. The yard is also one of the biggest in the State. It would surprise a visitor that no modern machineries are used by these builders who rely heavily on traditional principles of boat building. It would be a wonderful experience to watch planks of wood getting chiseled and crafted into wonderful vessels.At Alumkadavu Boat Building Yard, a famous kettuvalloms or houseboats are crafted here. Kettuvallam is the characteristic of Kerala backwater cruising and is used widely to promote backwater tourism. Kettuvalloms or houseboats is fully equipped with all modern amenities such as bedrooms, terraces, rest areas, balconies, kitchen and other entertainment options. In local language, Kettu means tying and vallam means country boat.
