The State Museum of Bhopal is amongst the best-designed museums in India. Based in the Shamla Hills the museum is housed in a modern building filled with natural light and wide spaces accessed by ramps. It is a place where visitors can amble through, pause, linger, and observe the well-displayed exhibits at leisure. The museum has 16 different theme galleries, showcasing the State’s sculptural masterpieces, pre-historic articles and fossils, excavated objects, epigraphs, manuscripts, paintings, royal collection, textile, documents, postal stamps, autographs, miniature paintings, coins, arms and weapons, articles associated with India’s freedom struggle. The museum also has reproductions of the now-destroyed Buddhist Bagh Cave paintings, 84 rare Jaina bronzes of the 8th to 11th centuries, Avalokesteshwaras of Lamaism, Saivite sculptures and miniature paintings showing the graceful lifestyles of those distant days.

HistoryEdit

State Museum Initially was known by the name of Bhopal Museum. Later, the building was relocated to Shyamla Hills, where its entire construction and designing was handled by the Capital Project Administration (C.P.A.) and Environmental Planning and Co-ordination Organization (EPCO), respectively. State Museum houses an amazing assortment of artifacts and offers on display the multifaceted rich cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh. Presently, this museum is home to seventeen galleries, housing historical works including excavated objects, pre-historic articles and fossils, royal collection, sculptures, paintings, documentary heritage and textiles of Madhya Pradesh. Also, you can witness some real nice masterpieces such as miniatures, musical instruments, weapons and coins that reflect the rich heritage of the city.

Taxi : Tourist taxis, mostly at airport, railway stations or through hotels and travel agencies is available in Bhopal. You can also hire a car from MP Tourism board. Bhopal has a large number of auto-rickshaws (rates negotiable) more commonly used and available everywhere in the city. Bhopal is also well connected to the major metros in India through many national highways.

Bus : Lots of bus facilities, public and private, are available in Bhopal. All cities in the state are connected to Bhopal by bus services. Overnight deluxe buses from Delhi, Gwalior and Jabalpur are available to Bhopal. Deluxe buses charge Rs. 3-4 per km.

Train : Bhopal Railway Station is a major railhead in Mumbai – Delhi broad gauge. It has connection trains to all major cities in India. Daily Shatabdi expresses shuttle between Bhopal and Delhi.

Air : Bhopal Airport, also known as Raja Bhoj Airport, is 15 km away from the heart of the city. Taxi Cab will charge about Rs 150, one way. Bhopal airport is connected to Mumbai, Indore, Gwalior and Delhi. International flights to Gulf cities like Sharjah and Dubai are operated from Bhopal.
