Chalakkudy River, also known as Chalakudy Puzha runs through Chalakudy town located in Thrissur district of Kerala state, south India. It is the fourth longest river in Kerala. Chalakkudy River is also one of the Kerala’s few rivers having relics of riparian vegetation in substantial level. The riparian forests of the Chalakkudy River have been found to be characterized by the presence of riparian species of plants, along with its evergreen and semi-evergreen species. The well known waterfalls such as Athirappilly Falls and Vazhachal Falls are situated on this river. One can always pay a visit to Chalakkudy River to have the evergreen view of nature.

HistoryEdit

Chalakudy is a Municipal Town situated on the Banks of Chalakudy River in Thrissur District of the Kerala State in India. Chalakudy Municipality came into existence in the year 1970 . According to the Hindu religious scholars and local legends, the town derived its name as ” Chalakudy ” from the word Shalakudy, which means a spot where sacrifices are largely made. According to the historians, this place had historical importance as it served the Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan as the base of operations camp during his warriors attack on the Travancore lines. Later this place was under the Kingdom of Kochi and then occupied by the British.
