HistoryEdit

Maya Devi Mandir, shrine is “the earliest Buddhist shrine in the world”, according to Coningham. In November 2013, an international team of archaeologists digging under the temple discovered the remains of an ancient tree shrine dated before 550 BCE, which is possibly the earliest evidence of Buddhist structures ever found and possibly the first archaeological evidence of Gautama Buddha’s life. The excavation was headed by Robin Coningham of Durham University, UK, and Kosh Prasad Acharya of the Pashupati Area Development Trust, Nepal.

The last return bus departs at 5 PM. Buses also run from Kathmandu, Pokhara, Gorakhpur and Varanasi to Sunauli. Gorakhpur to Sunauli state transport buses are reasonably frequent.

Train : The closest railway station to lumbini is at Nautanwa, but passenger trains are infrequent on this line. Nearest railway station is at Gorakhpur in India. It is 122 km from Lumbini. The alternative of taxi travel from the border crossing at Sunauli to Gorakhpur takes about two hours. From Sunauli, Siddharthanagar is only 3.5 kilometers. The Mahaparinirvan Express tourist train stops in Gorakhpur where tourists continue to Lumbini by road.
