Also known as Aterro do Flamengo, the Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes Park or Parque do Flamengo is the largest leisure area of Rio de Janeiro. This place has a strong sport tradition. Flamengo Park is the arrival point of marathons, besides being one of the main segments of Rio’s Cycling Race, a Latin American race that allots the largest amount of points on the International Cycling Union (UCI) World ranking.
Flamengo Park was conceived and constructed by architect Lota de Macedo Soares, with gardens designed by world-known landscapist Burle Marx. Sitting by the margins of Guanabara Bay, Flamengo Park holds the Modern Art Museum, the Carmen Miranda Museum and the Monument to the World War II Dead Soldiers, besides Marina da Glória, the main venue for the Rio 2007 Sailing competitions.
During the Games, the Marathon (men’s and women’s) arrival points are set up at the Flamengo Park, which also stagesthe Race Walking and Cycling Road competitions. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, the park will serve as host to athletics, and road cycling events. During the 2016 Summer Paralympics, the park will serve as host to track and field, marathon and road cycling events.
