Recognized as the third most populous city in Africa after Cairo and Kinshasa, Lagos is the most important economic and financial center of Nigeria which was once a capital city as well. A huge metropolis on the islands separated by creeks, Lagos is enjoined by three major bridges to the mainland, Greater Lagos and the islands. Well known for its music and nightlife, Victoria Island is still the main attraction, although several other nightclubs have now sprung up all around this port-town. Featuring a tropical savannah climate which is atypical of southern Nigeria, Lagos receives over 600 mm of rainfall every year in two spells.
An interesting 21st century Eko Atlantic City is also being built near Lagos on reclaimed land from the Atlantic Ocean. This admirable project covering 4 square miles is presently under construction, and with the help of a state-of-the-art high-tech infrastructure is intended to satisfy the growing financial, commercial, residential and tourist accommodation requirements of Lagos City.
