Asthipura historical site lies to the west of Thanesar and marks the place where the bodies of the dead soldiers of the Mahabharata war were said to have been cremated. Cunningham excavated the mound which measures about 700 feet by 500 feet (213 metres by 152 metres) and found an extensive platform of unbaked bricks still 364 feet (111 metres) in length. Besides, remains of walls and fragments of terracotta sculptures have also been found.
