Detail InformationEdit

The idea of a Latvian Museum of Naive Art was born in 2000, when the culture and art project NOASS received a collection of Arnolds Skrastiņš works as a generous present from its old friend Einārs Priede and Juris Pigits. It served as an inspiration for The Naive and the Primitive in Art and Literature – the first Primitivism-themed project.
The said project attracted a lot of public interest and response. The exhibition success prompted NOASS to expand the collection of Naive Art on the base of A.Skrastiņš works. The idea was much supported by the art expert Aivars Leitis.
Thanks to the New Riga Development Company Ltd., in autumn 2006 the Latvian Museum of Naive Art was allocated a former customs warehouse in Andrejsala. The museum opened its doors to the general public on the Museum Night on 20 May. The opening featured a ceremonial address by the then minister of culture Helēna Demakova, and the event became one of the Museum Night highlights.
So far the museum collection has been compiled from donated and private artworks left in the museum indefinitely and some works have been acquired through purchase. To date the regular collection of the museum, also considered a part of the national heritage, consists of 179 works of Naive Art with the supplementary collection of 900 works and photo-reproductions. The collection is constantly expanding through ever new discoverie of Naivism artists.
