Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India. Edit
Detail InformationEdit
The Suraj Bhavan is one of a group of beautiful pavilions in the 18th-century garden palace of the Jats of Bharatpur at Dig, built by Suraj Mal (r.1733-63). The pavilions are arranged around a formal garden designed in the Persian-Mughal tradition of the char bagh, filled with a multitude of fountains and flanked by two large reservoirs or tanks. The Suraj Bhavan (c.1760) is a secluded single-storey pleasure pavilion at the south-western corner of the garden. It is faced in white marble with a fountain and floral pietra dura decoration inside. This view of the pavilion is taken from the garden with drained fountains in the foreground and shows the north façade with a colonnade of five cusped arches and deep projecting double eaves or chajjas. To the east of the main building, this palace has balconies overhanging the water. The entire palace in marble is like an airy pavilion with fine ornamentation within the apartments.
