Detail InformationEdit
Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe or An Taibhdhearc, abbreviated TnaG, is the national Irish language theatre of Ireland. It was founded in 1928.
The word ‘Taibhdhearc’ appears as a gloss for the word ‘teatrum’ in an old Irish document in Latin. The word is based on two constituent parts, ‘taibh’ and ‘dearc’. In Modern Irish the verb ‘taibhrigh’ means ‘to dream’ while ‘taibhsigh’ means ‘to appear’ or ‘to loom’. A related noun is ‘taibhse’ meaning ‘a ghost’. The verb ‘dearc’ means ‘to glance’ and is the visual part of the composite noun ‘dearc-fhógrán’ (visual advertisement). The modern Irish for a theatre is ‘amharclann’.
