Liestal is the capital of the canton of Basel-Country in Switzerland, 17 km (11 mi) south of Basel. It is an industrial town with a cobbled-street Old Town. The municipality is the capital of the canton of Basel-Country. The old town is situated on a rocky outcrop between the Ergolz and Orisbach rivers and between Basel and the Jura Mountains. The town is fan-shaped, consisting of a wide main street (Gassenmarkt) and two side streets.
