Taoyuan City is the county seat of Taoyuan County in Taiwan, located in the northwestern part of the island. Taoyuan city is the gateway of Taiwan: with the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in vicinity, and is a 30-minute ride to the capital, Taipei. Taoyuan is the native home to the Plains tribes of Taiwanese aborigines.
Taoyuan’s old name was Taoziyuan , since there used to be many peach blossoms in the area. In 1920 under Japanese rule, the area was renamed Taoyuan Town, and incorporated into the Hsinchu state as a county jurisdiction. After the Chinese Civil War, it was “Taoyuan Town, Taoyuan County”. Since 1971, the name has remained Taoyuan City.
Within Taoyuan, there are five senior vocational high schools, 12 junior high schools, 23 primary schools, and an intelligence initiation school. Taoyuan is also home to a number of buxibans, or cram schools, which teach additional courses in mathematics, English, sciences, etc. There are also ten universities located near Taoyuan.
