Nicknamed as ‘Little England’, Nuwara Eliya is a small town located within a picturesque landscape and temperate climate in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. At an altitude of 6,128 feet above mean sea level, Nuwara Eliya, overlooked by the Pidurutalagala Mountain is the most important destination for tea production in Sri Lanka. A hill country retreat which eventually became a prime sanctuary for the British colonialists satisfied their lust for polo, golf, cricket and hunting in the past.
Displaying a distinctively different feel from the rest of the country, Nuwara Eliya still exhibits a large amount of colonial architecture. Conveniently accessible by rail and road from Colombo, journey to Nuwara Eliya itself is a pleasant ride. Other important tourist attractions of this hill town include the Haggala Botanical Gardens, a visit to the Pedro Tea Factory, the Hortons Plains and World’s End which offer fascinating walks through the temperate mountain environment.
