Vänersborg is a locality and the seat of Vänersborg Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden with 21,699 inhabitants in 2010. Until 1997 it was the capital of Älvsborg County, which was dissolved in 1998. Since 1999 Vänersborg is the seat of the regional parliament of Västra Götaland County. The city is located on the southern shores of lake Vänern, close to where the Göta älv and the Göta Canal leave the lake.
The marketplace Brätte was granted town privileges in 1580s. The name “Vänersborg” means “fortress at Vänern”. It comes from the fortlet which was built in 1644 for protection. The coat of arms is also from 1644, depicting a golden ship (a bojort) with two Swedish flags.
