Detail InformationEdit

Osio, or Hosius, was born in Cordoba at the end of the 3rd Century A.D., and around the year 294 he was named Bishop of Cordoba, before moving to Italy at the turn of the 4th century. He was a figure of great universal significance. He was highly regarded by the Roman Emperor, and soon started work as his personal adviser. He presided over the councils of Arles, Nicea and Sardica (in the years 314, 325 y 343 respectively), at which Arrianism was condemned. He also played an important part in drawing up the Nicene Creed which gave rise to the theory of homoousia (the divinity of Christ).
He attended the Council of Iliberis in Spain, which tried to introduce disciplinary measures, especially against the dangers of idolatry and Judaism. The attacks suffered by St. Athanasius at the hands of the Arians of Constantine caused Hosius to defend the future saint vigorously. For this he was persecuted and victimised, and he has gone down in history as a Confessor of the Faith. Finally, the emperor banished him to Sirmium, where he died in 357 A.D.. He was held in saintly veneration by the Greek Orthodox Church. In the small Cordoban square Plaza de las Capuchinas stands a statue in honour of this Cordoban bishop.
