The village of Borsosberény is located in the Western part of Nógrád County on Highway 2, on the way to the Parrassapuszta, the main Hungarian-Slovakian boarder crossing, right after Rétság. The village can be approached both by roads and rail. Borsosberény belongs to the Börzsönyi Tájvédelmi Körzet (Börzsöny Landscape Protection Area). The word “Berény” probably comes from the name of an old Kabar tribe and it means: “He surrenders.” The village was already mentioned in a document in 1274. In 1626 the village fell victim to Turkish destruction, due to which Borsosberény was almost completely destroyed. The rebuilding of the village began in the 1700’s. The village had Many country gentlemen with a residence there, including the Bishop of Vác. The village’s Roman catholic Church was built in 1730’s and it was later expanded in 1790. The church building has a clock tower at the front and it also displays semi-circular chancel. The nave of the church has three arches and has an organ gallery. The Tihanyi Mansion was built in 1826 with its porch of nine pillars and was rebuilt in 1888, and at the moment it serves as a kindergarten school. The Börzsöny Turista ház (Börzsöny Tourist house) and the Almáskert Pihenő (Apple Orchard Rest House) warmly await people who would like to rest at the foot of the Börzsöny hills.
