Sárospatak was raised to the rank of town by King Emeric in 1201. Saint Elizabeth of the House of Arpad, the daughter of King Andrew II was born in Sárospatak in 1207. The statue of Saint Elizabeth stands in front of the Gothic-style parish-church. The castle of the town used to be protected by a moat even the Tartars avoided the castle.
The settlement flourished under the Perényis who had founded the famous Calvinist College, that is a school of high renown even today. The castle of the town was also built by the Perényis. Another flourish came when the Rákóczis and the Lorántffys possessed the town. Patak was the centre of a gigantic estate at that time. The priest-in-ordinance prepared the first portion of Aszú wine for Zsuzsanna Lórántffy around 1630 the Aszú wine became famous all over the World in later years.
The most famous sight of Sárospatak are the Rákóczi castle on the bank of the River Bodrog, the Rákóczi Museum inside the castle and the Gothic-style castle-church dating back to the 14 century. The famous College together with the School Museum, the Great Library, and the collections and cradle-books of the Trans-Tiszanian Reformed Diocese are also worth mentioning. The inner city has a unique athmosphere, Imre Makovecz, the famous Hungarian architect has designed the cityscape here. The thermal bath in Végardó offers refreshment for visitors.
