Tapolca stretches along the western end of the Balaton-highlands in the middle of a basin titled after its own name. A settlement had already been established on the shore of Mill Pond during the Neolithic Age. For the first time, Romans started wine cultivation on the basalt hills of the vicinity, and later on Tapolca became the centre of wine distribution.
The town’s most spectacular sight, the Cave was discovered in 1903, while drilling a bore hole to create a new well. Commencing present year, all visitors are welcome to row a boat on the water of this marvelous and natural sight. The Mill Pond is situated in downtown, where the buildings constructed on high stone walls recall the character of a Mediterranean countryside. The Ancient core of Tapolca may be seen on the so-called Temple Mound in front of the Roman Catholic Church, where the mildly re-erected walls of a medieval castle and its pitfall next to the former gate provide an unforgettable memory for all. Directly in the vicinity of the ruins, the City Museums provides room for a pedagogical collection unique in the Transdanubian region. In addition, thermal water with a medicinal feature is available for the swimming pool of the city.
