The village of Gardur at the north tip of the peninsula is named after Skagagardur, a protective wall that lay from Kirkjubol to Utskalar. The wall or gardur (cognate with English garth), which probably dated from the early days after the settlement, served to keep livestock away from the crops. The wall was broad and tall, built of turf and large rocks. Remnants of it are visible by the old road between Gardur and Sandgerdi. While today the only reminder of agriculture in the area is fields of grass, several hundred years after the settlement farmers were still cultivating such crops as wheat, oats and barley.
