The medieval city of Sandomierz, located on seven hills, belongs to the most beautiful and oldest cities in Poland. Over 120 monuments of architecture dating back to various periods have been preserved there. Among the highest grade listed monuments there is a medieval layout of the city with its Renaissance-style town hall in the old market centre and St. James’s church being one of the oldest brickstone edifices in Poland.
There are historical monuments which remember the times of the king Casmir the Great (in the 14th century), namely the Royal Castle – now housing the exhibitions of the Regional Museum, the Opatowska Gate being the only well-preserved gate found in the fortified system of defense walls and a 14th century cathedral with its interior decorated with precious Byzantine and Russian frescoes. The late Renaissance Collegium Gostomianum dating back to the 17th century has for over 400 years housed one of the oldest schools in Poland. Jan Długosz’s House constituting a well-preserved example of a Gothic dwelling house, is now a seat of the Diocesan Museum with its rich collections. Tourists may also take a stroll in the 470-metre Underground Tourist Route. On warm and sunny days you can admire knight tournaments, courtly dances and “Live Chess” tournaments held in the old market and the tenement house of the Olenicki Family. Each year at the beginning of July the city holds the International Knight Tournament for the Sword of Zawisza Czarny.
