The largest City on the Greek Island of Crete, Heraklion woke up to the call during 9th century AD and grew around the legendry palace of Knossos. Featuring Byzantine churches, a well preserved 15th century Venetian Wall & Fortress and an Archeological Museum holding remains of a 3000 year old Minoan civilization, Heraklion is presently home to over 155,000 people. Displaying a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters with relatively little rain, Heraklion, with a three kilometer Sandy Beach provides opportunities for horse-riding, rock-climbing and a host of water-sports.
Most conveniently accessible by high-speed catamarans and normal ferries which ply to/from Athens, Heraklion also has a domestic airport with regular scheduled flight services to the national capital. With numerous varieties of hotels and restaurants, Heraklion serves as a perfect base for tourists wanting to explore the cities, fertile coastal plains and the rugged mountains of the Greek Island of Crete.
