Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located in, in the southern part of India. This sanctuary located in the district, and lies quite near, around seventy five kilometers away (75 km). The bird sanctuary is a destination that many tourists flock to, as it is home to a large number of migratory birds that visit the sanctuary during the winter months. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary attracts a lot of birds including many rare species of birds like the common sandpiper, the grey wagtail, the pintail, the blue winged teal, the garganey and many more. gather together in large numbers in Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, mainly to spot a rare species or two, including egrets, darters, night herons, pond herons, open billed storks and spot billed birds. These birds migrate from around the world and build nests in Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary from November to December, due to the very supportive and hospitable habitat in this region. You can also visit the Karikili Bird Sanctuary, which is located around nine kilometers from the main sanctuary at Vedanthangal. This sanctuary also houses many birds, and is not too crowded like the one in Vedanthangal. For this reason, this sanctuary is relatively popular among family crowds who look for peaceful spots where they can picnic.

HistoryEdit

Even before the present day concern towards wildlife conservationism, the local villagers around Vedanthangal had been guardians of birds in the area given the benefits they recognised in having them flourish. These villagers seemed well aware of the ability of the birds to help control pests including insects and rodents, as well as the fertilising benefit provided to their corps with the help of the bird’s droppings. In the later part of the 18th century, the villagers successfully petitioned the Bristish District Collector to help prohibit the shooting of birds in the village by the British soldiers. This protection continued till 1936 when the lake was first recognised as a sanctuary. In 1962, it was accorded the status of a Forest Reserve and in 1972, it was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary.

By Train : Chingelpettu station is the nearest railway station at a distance of 26 km from Vedanthangal

By Bus : From Chennai, about 80 km from Vedanthangal on the National highway 45 head towards Chengalpattu. From here travel south to Padalam Junction. Buses are also available to Tambaram and Chengalpettu.
